What's included
- ESA ID card builder — wallet-size, with your animal's photo and a housing-rights summary on the back. Print or save to your phone.
- Housing rights guide — what the Fair Housing Act and HUD guidance require of landlords; how Canada's provincial human rights codes work; what a landlord may ask for and what they may not; what to do if refused.
- Accommodation request letters — US (FHA) and Canadian (human rights code) versions, citing the right law for your location.
- Clinician letter outline — a structure for the letter your own licensed professional writes, so it covers what landlords are entitled to see and nothing they aren't.
- Travel notes — what US and Canadian carriers currently do with ESAs, and the pet-in-cabin alternatives.
The one document that matters
For an ESA, the document landlords look for is a letter from a licensed health professional who actually knows you. This kit doesn't replace that and we don't write or arrange those letters — the outline in the kit is for you to bring to your own provider. Be cautious of websites promising instant letters; HUD and several states have said those aren't reliable.
Good to know
ESAs are protected mainly in housing, not in stores or airline cabins. This kit is identification and education; it doesn't certify or register your animal, and your landlord may still ask for your clinician's letter. An ESA does not have the public-access rights of a service dog.
Questions ESA owners ask
Can my landlord deny my emotional support animal?
Only in narrow cases — if the specific animal is a direct threat or would cause substantial damage, or the request is unreasonable. Otherwise, under the Fair Housing Act and Canadian human rights codes they must consider the accommodation and can't charge pet fees.
What documentation can a landlord ask for?
If your disability or need isn't obvious, reliable documentation from a health professional with personal knowledge of you — not a diagnosis. In Florida, Illinois, California and some other states the law specifies who may write it.
Can any animal be an ESA?
In housing, yes in principle — dogs and cats are most common; unusual animals face a higher bar.
Do ESAs have public access rights?
Generally no. Businesses may admit them as pets if they choose. Claiming an ESA is a service animal is an offence in many places.
Can my ESA fly with me?
US airlines treat ESAs as pets since 2021. Canadian carriers set their own policies; some accept emotional support dogs with documentation.
Does the kit expire?
No. Your access and card don't expire. Your clinician's letter usually should be renewed yearly.
